I recently sold a pair of jeans to a buyer in the UK. She messaged me saying that she had not received the jeans in about 2 weeks. I told her she should probably check her post office because sometimes it gets held up in customs.
I got a message from her today saying:
"Hi there
I got the jeans today but I had to pay a customs fee of £17. This was not mentioned when I purchased the jeans and I would like this refunded to my paypal account as soon as possible.
Thank you"
How the heck should I even respond to this? I think it is slightly ridiculous because she should know that if she makes a purchase from the US to be shipped to her, she will need to pay customs fees. I marked the package as a gift and the value that she won it for ($103). She isn't an eBay newbie and has like 477 feedback. I get the feeling she is going to leave me negative feedback if I do not pay for her customs fees.
Ugh. Any advice? What's with ebayers lately!

The value is $35 and under and theres no customs fees and its not your duty at all to mark them lower or anything like that, its her own fault, she should know the customs rules, you dont have to refund her, its her own fault for not checking how the package would be marked.

Tell her to go ...... herself. You have not done anything wrong. Probably cos of the feedback changes she thinks you will bend over backwards for her cos you don't want a neg.

Yeah, neg feedback sucks especially if its not your fault but there's not much else we can do but suck it up. Some buyers are so rediculous...
I just had a girl from CA message me 6 weeks after she won an item of mine asking her if she could still pay the invoice for the jeans even though she got a non-paying bidder strike and I got my fees back. Lol, she didn't even want to pay right away, but next week

seriously! I read the message and instantly got infuriated! She HAS to know about her countries own customs seeing as how she buys and sells on ebay regularly.
Ebay buyers seem to have gotten worse lately, especially now that sellers can't even neg them. I've gotten 3 nonpaying bidders within the last MONTH.

It sounds like she's just trying to rip you off. Don't do it, at this point, anyone who uses ebay and knows the new policy knows the sellers are getting fucked with feedback- hopefully that means it doesn't hold as much water as it used to. Just leave an appropriate response in the reply section and for your feedback on her page.

very very similar thing happened to me except that the guy thought I had forgotten to pay the import duty. He lives in London and I ended up writing a huge long explanation about how when I returned to the US from the UK that I had to pay import duty on anything over 800 dollars. blah blah blah. He never replied and never left any kind of feedback.
I suggest you bluff this person - offer to accept it back (you're allowed to play dumb too, right?) and that you'll send a full refund when it comes back. Then explain that you are not in control of her country's import/export regulations. You might get threatened or neg'd but if you do, there IS a way to get it removed.... not that it isn't an annoying process.

update: OMG! I just received an email that said she filed a ebay dispute against me for "item not as described" BECAUSE SHE RIPPED THEM THIS MORNING!
here is what she said:
"Hello, As you may remember I purchased these from you in July. I went to wear them this morning forthe first time and they have ripped. This is obviously not common with genuine Rock & Republic jeans, I know this as I own a few genuine pairs myself all in a size 24. I would like to send them back to you for a refund as I paid alot of money for these and for them to rip straight away is totally unacceptable and they are no good to me now. I await your reply."
what should i do!!

I wouldn't bother to respond to her email but I would escalate the dispute to a CLAIM and explain to PAYPAL that the buyer had purchased the item from you TWO MONTHS AGO! and the item that she received was EXACTLY as described (with no rips of course). If you have detail photos in your listing I'm sure Paypal will side with you.

What a crook. You've GOT to be kidding me!!! She infuriates me just hearing about from you. I'd be so tempted to write "if the jeans ripped you should really go up a size, or two."
