What really bugs me is how exactly did the mccain campaign get a hold of my cell phone number? Last time I checked, cell phone numbers are not that easily available as home ones.

...and here I though a real person was actually calling my cell...

Back to the topic at hand...

McCain will also have to lower expectations if he wins. He wants to cut everyone's taxes. How will he pay for the wars? The $700 billion Wall Street bailout? Slash government spending to the bone? Yeah, let's flood a shrinking job market with even more unemployed people, this time from government jobs. That won't sink the economy.

And will the Congress approve of draconian cuts in the budget? If the Dems stand a chance in getting a veto-proof majority in the Senate, they're not going to go for that. McCain would have to compromise with them, leading to 'lowered expectations'.

Cutting government spending is only part of the solution. I do think we'll have to do something drastic, like possibly a spending freeze for a few years. Asking for a shared sacrifice, which used to be the modus operandi for fighting any war (Victory gardens, anyone?), is also in the cards, I think. And it's all got to be done very carefully, very slowly, so as not to upset the apple cart.

I'm undecided. This last bit of news to leak out about Coleman's wife smacks of personal attack. It may be true, and it may not have come directly from the Franken camp, but it's still too 'Swift Boat'-ey to me.

Coleman's a douchebag, that's for sure. But he's done a few right things as senator, and has bucked the GOP, even when he was Bush's "lickspittle" (quote from George Galloway) during Bush's first term. That being said, I can't bring myself to vote for him, either.

I may vote for Dean Barkley, the independent candidate. Or I may hold my nose and vote for Franken.

If you want candidates to ever be "real", you're going to have to rework the entire partisan system. "Real" people don't have to curb what they say to get support from a party.


The general discussion that this election is "up in the air" at this point astounds me just as much. Intrade Prediction Markets

IMO they mostly tailor their messages to get support from the people in the middle, the Independents who do not have party affiliation and not necessarily get support from their respective own parties. Tailoring the message happens on both side of the fence. The whole concept that a candidate has to 'move to the center' and that it is seems to be completely acceptable is also disturbing.

This whole "lowering your expectations after the deal is done" talk reminds me of marriage....

Depends upon who they are trying to attract at a particular moment in the campaign.

Primaries: Obama was tailoring his message waay to the left, as a way to attract younger, more idealistic audiences.

Convention: McCain tailored his message to the right -- by appointing Sarah Palin -- as a way to attract religious fundamentalists, and the far-right wing of the Republican Party, which has never really been very fond of him.

Now: Both teams are tailoring their messages to the undecided voters, so they can mop up the last votes needed to defeat their opponent.

It's really only a statement that his supporters are so many and so energized that this is even necessary (if that report is even factually accurate).

I think people realize that the next president is going to be handed what is, in some way, a broken country and will have to put the pieces together. Neither candidate really knows what's involved in the day-to-day running of the country, so whomever gets elected is ultimately in for a big wake-up-call. And if the rate of hair graying of the past few presidents is any indication, either one would have a lot to chew over.

People on both sides of the isle expect a lot from bureaucracy, but those move slowly and ponderously. Neither candidate is going to be able to reshape the country massively, so ideologues expecting quick results will be crestfallen irrespective of their political persuasion.
