whats a sufficient way to lose muscle mass in areas of the body such as the thighs and calves while not gaining fat?

Hey Evan, I could always lean out parts of my body as needed by specific training. I have big honking quads as well.
When I was wanting to do some hard rockclimbing route that required a lot of upper body strength and smaller legs, I ran ONLY flat. No hills at all to lengthen the muscle instead of bulk it. No hard climbing on the bike or anything, either.
However, if your thighs are wanting to be muscular, it is hard to maintain without specific training like that.

When I was your age, I changed my "shape" at will. Obviously the natural shape of your body is there but you can refine it.
You don't want to lose muscle mass, get rid of the body fat before all.

So to summarize. Don't eat a bunch of crap, and run on the flat.

Now I'm ancient it takes a little longer, but that's a whole other story.

eat less. focus on other muscles so that you still get the benefits of lean muscle mass. listen to begret. although as she already said, it's hard to change your thighs wanting to be muscular, especially if you've been training your muscles since youth. plus, the parts of your body that gain weight first are the last parts to lose it.

No pain No gain, I recommend you change your diet and hit the gym. 60 minutes of cardio (running, swimming, cycling training) per day+ reduced caloric intake = sizing down in no time at all. Drink more water, eat less process foods, eat more nutritious food. Cutting back on sugar & fats will do wonders. I've totally embraced eating more vegtables and switching over to whole grains. You have to change your whole eating habits. It's never really over at least not for me...mmmm.... donuts.
