So I went to my first ever yoga class today. It was the "hot yoga" variety (I don't know the proper name and the place is called that so whatever ). I know nothing about it, but had a lot of fun. It was so relaxing, challenging, and, well, great!

So I want to know...who else does yoga? what kinds? Is yoga really that great for you? What are the best types? Tips? experiences? What did you pay for a lesson? Anything you want pretty much. I'm really interested in hearing about it.

Yoga is the shit. The one you described is Bikram yoga -- 105 degree room with ... 27? i think postures. I used to go a lot and am now getting back into it.

I absolutely love Bikram. It's like a frickin drug. The air inside is laced with coke, I swear. You come out feeling so refreshed and mentally at peace ... as for the tips, i'd say just keep going. the first 10 times are going to be hell but you do drop inches. the one i go to costs 20 dollars a class but you can get memberships, etc.

i've heard of some other types of yoga -- ashtang or something like that and i'm tempted to give it a try so if you try that let me know!

ps bikram's also been noted as the hardest of the yoga variety so if you can survive bikram, you can survive ... anything

^ Court feel free to join me the studio is just off of 17th ave almost at Sarcee.

It IS like a drug. There is also 2 levels of the yoga done there, I'm obviously on the first one. I'm really really REALLY enjoying it. (I just got back from another one).

I paid $16/session (1.5hrs) but am looking at getting more passes (which is cheaper) I think it's 20 passes/$212 (student rate).

I'm really hope to drop some inches and a bit of weight. Should i keep up my normal exercises at home on alternating days? I thought that would probably be best.

is it normal to be SUPER hungry afterwards? About an hour later I'm starving, so I've been trying to heat healthier meals (like tuna sandwiches with veggies/nuts). Since I'm paying so much (ok I'm cheap) I want to get the most out of each session.

it is normal to feel hungry although i normally dont get hungry for about an hour
the thing with bikram is that it complete kills your appetite for carbs
i dont think you can drop weight with it though, it's mostly for inches i think
but you should keep up other exercise, imo cardio and weights?

Yoga can really do wonders for your body as it ages. Muscles are soft but still really strong...and the flexibility it promotes is legendary.

Once you get really high up there is Kriya Yoga...which is basically the practice of transcending one's physical body. There's no limit to how far you can take it.

I took some classes in college, but haven't signed up for anything since. I just use the stuff I learned to keep me limber and supplement my karate practice (flexibility >> speed >> power)

Admit it, you signed up for classes just to pick up chicks.

I love Power Yoga aka Astanga/Ashtanga... I swear you will sweat a ton, even in a normal temperature room, but you can also do it in a warm room like Bikram Yoga.

Astanga really focuses on your breathing, with either an inhale or exhale marking the transition from each position to the next, which makes for more rapid movements.

I also practice ashtanga yoga. Couldn't live without it, like others have said, it's like a drug.
Totally banned from jeans! (except maybe sz 25 7FAM Manchester Crystal Sigs...)

I love my yoga too. I want to go so badly this week but I'm so busy and I just don't have time until thursday. It's killing me! hahaha.

Also I got past the super starving afterwards feeling which is nice. I think it's really wierd how 'well' i do each time changes.

Also I could use a tip on this one.... how do I loosen up a tight shoulder? I have a hard time pulling my bicep (sp?) behind my ears because it is soooo tight it hurts! It's just the right shoulder too.

I was looking for shoulder stretch videos (as opposed to written explanations). And since you are on the subject of yoga as well.

YouTube - Office Yoga: Easy Exercises for Desk Jockeys : Shoulder Stretch 1: Easy Office Yoga Exercises for Desk Jockeys

YouTube - Office Yoga: Easy Exercises for Desk Jockeys : Shoulder Stretch 2: Easy Office Yoga Exercises for Desk Jockeys

YouTube - Physical Therapy Exercises and Stretches for the Shoulder Muscles : Internal Shoulder Rotation Exercise for Shoulder Physical Therapy

YouTube - Shoulder Pain - Stretch your Biceps for Relief

EDIT: not specific to shoulders, but also consider this:
YouTube - Chest and Biceps Stretch

YouTube - Rotator Cuff Pain Relief / Shoulder Pain Relief

YouTube - Got shoulder pain? stretch your neck
