I've read through older topics about how to protect boots but wanted to get some more info on the topic. Several people recommend mink oil. I bought some and used it on a pair of Diesel Fred boots and it did darkened them (light tan to a darker tan), but also left a bit of white film near stitching and around where the sole meets the boot in the crack. Could this be caused by using too much mink oil, mink oil that was too old (the plastic tub I bought looked a bit old and mink oil is crazy hard to find in Germany, only online and very few options) an improper application technique, or...?
I just bought a pair of Paul Smith York boots in black and the same Premiatas Kubie got in dark brown and want to make sure I'm taking good care of these. The Yorks shouldn't have any issue with the color darkening I guess since they're black, but I'd like to keep the Premiatas the color they are but still protect them.
I've also bought some nice leather belts and one of them is really stiff. By bending it, I notice slight cracking so I'm afraid to bend it too much and risk damaging it for good. Is there a good way to avoid this from happening?
Do you have any tips for applying mink oil / leather treatment and wiping any excess residue off?

Good buy MatthewK. You can search that on Google. But here are some tips that i posted before.
-Leather uppers should be treated regularly, use a good quality cream for a dull lustre or bees wax polish for high shine. This helps to moisturise the leather and prevents cracking or creasing, always ensure your shoes are dry before applying.
-Never use liquid polish applicators on fine leather shoes, it can contain chemicals that destroy natural leather.
-Suede and Nubuck should be cleaned gently with a suede brush. Removing stubborn marks will require a suitabe product available in any good quality shoe care store.
-Please be aware that Suedes & Nubucks can never be made entirely colourfast and care should be taken on carpets, furnishings etc.
-If your shoes become wet allow them to dry naturally, never dry them using direct heat or a radiator.
-Natural leather heels and soles are often made up of several layers. Leather will expand when wet and should be dried slowly to avoid separation of these layers.
-Leather shoes can require a day to dry out from natural perspiration...avoid wearing your shoes on consecutive days.
-Always use a shoe horn when putting on your shoes, this avoids damage to the heel area.
- Clean them and put the shoe trees after each use.
- Also, i heard someone said that do not use milk oil for the boots because it makes them so solf & flexible as to not hold their shape. Should use the wax treaments to clean them.

saddle soap to clean and mink oil a few times a year to protect them. any wax or oil will darken the leather temporarily, but it will return to the original color over time as the oil is absorbed and evaporates. i wouldn't worry about the darkening anyway because all leather will eventually fade and develop patina in areas of wear and creasing, as well as from the natural oils in your feet.

How about the sole, James? Because i just bought a pair of Carpe Diem 4 holes in excellent condition. The buyer told me that the sole and heel have protective rubber on. But i still haven't received them yet until nextweek. That's why i just wondering that how the condition of them if their sole and hell have protective rubber on?
Here are some pics. i know the pics can't tell anything until i touch them. But, do you think that they still look like in the great condition?

besides the fact that they are fugly as hell, they look quite worn to me.
protective rubber on the sole is a personal preference, any cobbler can do it and it can add traction and comfort. it also prolongs the like of the original leather sole and is cheaper to replace the rubber than it is to resole the boot after some wear. its basically a piece of rubber in the shape of the sole nailed on to the heel and the forefoot area where the sole touches the ground.

also, how many pairs of boots do you have? i think WAY too many. 2 pairs is good, 3 is okay if they are different, any more is just dumb imo. boots need to be worn A LOT to make them look good.

depends on how thick the rubber sole is. it can easily be removed as well.

I agree. I love the way my brown largos look now that I've beat the shit out of them. They'll probably fall apart soon but I really wouldn't be that sad, lol.
But I do have some black largos now that I haven't worn yet. I kinda want to keep them new looking and wear them as dressy boots. Anything I should do besides what's already on this page?

Yeah, buying $1,000 boots that will no longer be "cool" to wear in under 2 years just because they could theoretically last a decade is definitely the sensible path in this case.
